Dean Feldthusen’s Mandate Renewed
President Allan Rock has announced that the University of Ottawa Board of Governors has renewed Bruce Feldthusen’s deanship at the Common Law Section for five years, until June 30, 2013.Dean Feldthusen began his position at the Common Law Section on January 1, 2000. His deanship was renewed for a second term in 2005. In September 2007, Dean Feldthusen was appointed Vice-President, University Relations pro tempore at the University of Ottawa, and he returned full-time to Common Law as dean in July 2008.
Dean Feldthusen holds a B.A. (Queen’s), an LL.B. (Western Ontario), an LL.M. (Michigan), and an S.J.D. (Michigan). Before his position as Dean of Common Law, he was a tenured law professor at the University of Western Ontario, where he specialized in Torts, Public Regulation, and Human Rights.
Best known for his book entitled, Economic Negligence—now in its fifth edition—Dean Feldthusen is also author of the leading text, Canadian Tort Law, which he co-authored with the Honourable Mr. Justice Allen Linden, and the case book, Canadian Tort Law, which he co-authored with Justice Linden and Lewis Klar.
Dean Feldthusen was the research director for the Ontario Law Reform Commission’s 1989 study on Exemplary Damages. He has also practised law and litigated a number of cases of public interest on a pro bono basis. Dean Feldthusen works frequently as a litigation consultant and has had a major role in the preparation of numerous Supreme Court of Canada factums and arguments during the past decade. In recent years, he has assisted counsel in the preparation of a number of high profile class actions in tort. Dean Feldthusen is a member of the American Law Institute, the current academic representative on the Board for the National Judicial Institute, and is a past-President of the Canadian Law Deans.
